“This is insane. It’s freezing out here.” Frankie Carothers shoved his hands into his coat pockets and hunched his shoulders. He turned to the group of friends who were gathered with him in Fetchers Hollow. “Do you guys honestly believe that story? I mean come on, a witch who magically appears on Halloween to steal souls? And then carries them around in balloons? Balloons? How lame is that? And we’re in the middle of the freakin’ forest. If we weren’t here, there wouldn’t even be souls to steal.”
Starla poked a finger into his chest. “If you don’t believe why did you even come? Why don’t you just leave?”
“I don’t get it.” Frankie shook his head. “If you guys believe in this crazy chick, why are you here? Do you want to sacrifice your soul so she can have an epic balloon bouquet? You know what? It doesn’t matter, I’m outta here.”
Frankie tramped out of the trees and onto the football field of Fetchers High School muttering to himself. “What a bunch of morons. Oooh a witch with balloons. Pick me. Pick me.”
A loud thrump and the sudden flare of the stadium lights brought his steps and his mocking words to a halt. He turned around with a hand shading his eyes. “What the hell? Who’s there?” Despite his bravado, his heart pounded painfully in his chest. “Coach is going to be pissed if you mess up his field.”
“I promise I won’t hurt one little bit of the field. But you, Frankie Carothers, you are another matter altogether.”
The woman’s words reached him as her form began to materialize out of the rising fog. It was when the screams from the balloons in her grasp reached him that he turned to run. Too late.
